Bovec, a small town of 3,200 residents in northwestern Slovenia, sits at the heart of the Soča Valley. The emerald-green Soča River flows through the Julian Alps, creating deep gorges and rapids. You can rappel down 12-meter waterfalls during canyoning trips, ski at 2,300 meters on Kanin's slopes, or swim in the 12°C waters of the Soča River. The town's location between limestone peaks and river valleys makes it a starting point for hiking, climbing, and water sports throughout the year.

Location in the Julian Alps

Bovec lies 136 kilometers northwest of Ljubljana, at an elevation of 434 meters in the upper Soča Valley. The town sits below the eastern slopes of Mount Kanin, near the Italian border. The surrounding Julian Alps rise above 2,000 meters, with hiking trails connecting to Triglav National Park. Summer temperatures average 25°C, while winter temperatures drop to -5°C with regular snowfall.

The Soča River Valley

The Soča River winds for 138 kilometers through western Slovenia and northeastern Italy, starting in the Trenta Valley. Limestone particles suspended in the water create its green-blue color. The water stays at 12°C year-round, and you can swim at designated spots in summer. The Great Soča Gorge, 10 kilometers from Bovec, cuts 750 meters through limestone cliffs, creating pools and rapids along its course.

River Sports and Activities

From June to September, you can join two-hour rafting trips on class II-III rapids. Local guides teach safety procedures and techniques before each trip. Kayaking instruction begins in calm water sections before moving to faster currents. During canyoning tours in the Susec Canyon, you'll descend waterfalls up to 12 meters high and swim through narrow rock channels.
