Komárno

Danube views and good beer on the Austrian border

This calm Danube River town has a central square lined with cafes and local pubs. Its location at the Slovak-Austrian border makes it a good starting point for visiting Pöstlingberg.

Komárno sits at the meeting point of the Danube and Váh rivers in Slovakia, where 54% of residents speak Hungarian as their first language. Walk through Europe Place to see a yellow Spanish house with wrought-iron balconies next to a half-timbered German building. Swim in 45°C thermal waters, paddle a kayak on two rivers, or examine Bronze Age artifacts in the marble halls of Zichy Palace.

What to See at Europe Place

Europe Place covers 6,500 square meters in central Komárno, where 35 buildings showcase European architectural designs. Look up at the yellow Spanish house's wrought-iron balconies, or examine the exposed wooden beams of the German building. The Peace Bell Tower contains historical tombstones in its base, and the Millennium Fountain marks the center of the square. Stop for coffee at Kút café or a pint at the Black Cat Irish Pub on the ground floor.

Water Activities and Thermal Spa

The thermal swimming pool complex spans 2.5 hectares with two springs: one at 45°C and another at 30°C. The water contains minerals that help with joint and rheumatic conditions. At the town's port, you can rent kayaks or canoes to paddle the Danube, Váh, and their connecting channels. In summer, you'll find designated swimming areas along the waterfront.

Walking the Fortification System

Six bastions and three fortresses - Csilag, Igmand, and Monostor - guard the meeting point of the Danube and Váh rivers. Walk through the 16th-century complex to see how engineers designed the defense systems. Visit the museum in the sixth bastion, northeast of the train station, to see military equipment and learn about the fort's construction methods.

Museums and Cultural Events

Inside the marble halls of Zichy Palace, the Danube Region Museum displays Bronze Age tools, Roman coins, and artifacts dating until 1849. Walk through rooms filled with local costumes, farming tools, and household items from past centuries. Every two years in April, the International Competition of Singers of F. Lehár fills the town with classical music, followed by the Lehár Festival's musical performances.

Crossing Between Two Countries

Three bridges connect Komárno with Komárom in Hungary. Cross the iron Elisabeth Bridge from the 1900s, watch ships pass under the modern lifting bridge, or take the newest bridge, completed in 2020. Walking across any of these bridges lets you explore both parts of what was once a single city.
