A mountainous exclave of Dubai surrounded by the Hajar Mountains, with a 16th-century fort, kayaking spots at the dam, and biking trails through rocky terrain.

Located 134 kilometers east of Dubai city in the Hajar Mountains, Hatta draws visitors with its mountain bike trails, calm waters of Hatta Dam, and adventure activities at Wadi Hub. The mountain town's rock carvings date back thousands of years, while its cooler climate makes it a popular weekend escape from Dubai's heat.

Getting to Hatta

Drive from Dubai to Hatta in about 90 minutes along the Dubai-Hatta Road. The route passes sand dunes and rocky outcrops before climbing into the Hajar Mountains. No public buses run to Hatta, but tour companies operate daily trips from Dubai and Sharjah.

Mountain Biking and Hiking Trails

At the Hatta Mountain Bike Trail Centre, you'll find over 50 kilometers of marked paths. Choose from green trails for beginners or tackle black routes with technical sections and steep descents. Rent bikes at the trail center or join local guides. Hikers can follow similar paths, with routes lasting from 30 minutes to full-day mountain expeditions.

Hatta Dam and Water Activities

The reservoir's turquoise water reflects the surrounding granite mountains. Paddle across the calm water in a rented kayak or walk the dam wall for views of the valley. The reservoir contains over 2,500 million gallons of water and generates power for the region.

Wadi Hub Adventures

Roll downhill inside an inflatable ball at the Middle East's first zorbing track in Wadi Hub. Test your aim at the archery range and axe-throwing station, scale the climbing walls, or splash down the water slide. Winter activities include paragliding sessions and guided tours in off-road vehicles.

Where to Stay

Sleep in a mountain lodge at Damani, where windows stretch from floor to ceiling with mountain views. Park yourself in an airstream trailer at Sedr or pitch a tent at the campsite near Wadi Hub. Local holiday homes provide additional accommodation options.

Climate and When to Visit

At 330 meters above sea level, Hatta maintains temperatures several degrees below Dubai's. Summer highs reach 55°C with lower humidity than the coast. Winter brings mild weather and occasional rain - ideal for outdoor exploration. Many facilities, including the Mountain Bike Trail Centre, close during summer.

Historical Background

The restored Hatta Heritage Village displays mountain life from past centuries, with stone houses and a fortress. Archaeological discoveries include graves from 3500 BCE and rock carvings in the mountainsides. The area transferred from Omani to Dubai control around 1850.
