Rawson is the capital of Chubut Province, in the Patagonian region of Argentina. It is located on the eastern shore of the Gulf of San Jorge, opposite the island of Tierra del Fuego. The settlement was founded in 1865 as a military outpost and was originally known as Punta Alta. It was renamed Rawson in honour of Admiral William Brown, the founder of the Argentine Navy. The city has a population of about 80,000 people.
