Ushuaia, the capital of Tierra del Fuego province in Argentina, sits at the southern tip of South America. This remote city of about 80,000 people is nestled between the Martial Mountains to the north and the Beagle Channel to the south. In Ushuaia, you'll find yourself hiking through subantarctic forests, spotting penguins on nearby islands, and perhaps preparing for an Antarctic expedition. The city's past as a former penal colony and naval base adds an intriguing historical layer to your visit.

Location at 54°48'S Latitude

Ushuaia is located on Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, the largest island of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. At 54°48'S latitude, it's considered the southernmost city in the world (though the smaller Chilean town of Puerto Williams lies slightly further south). The city stretches along the shore of the Beagle Channel, with snow-capped mountains rising behind it. This position at the edge of the continent gives Ushuaia its nickname of "El Fin del Mundo" (The End of the World).

Getting to Ushuaia

Most visitors arrive in Ushuaia by air. The Malvinas Argentinas International Airport has daily flights from Buenos Aires (3.5 hours) and regular connections from other Argentine cities like El Calafate. You can also reach Ushuaia by land, driving the scenic Ruta Nacional 3 highway through Patagonia. The drive from Buenos Aires takes about 3 days. Some travelers arrive by cruise ship, as Ushuaia is a frequent port of call for ships rounding Cape Horn.

Exploring Tierra del Fuego National Park

Just 12 km west of Ushuaia lies Tierra del Fuego National Park, protecting 63,000 hectares of subantarctic forest and coastline. You can take day hikes on trails like the Coastal Path or Cerro Guanaco for views over the Beagle Channel. The park contains lakes, rivers, peat bogs, and a variety of wildlife. Look for Magellanic woodpeckers, Andean condors, and guanacos. You can reach the park by car, public bus, or the End of the World Train.

Cruising the Beagle Channel

Taking a boat trip on the Beagle Channel is a common way to experience the area's marine life and scenery. Half-day cruises typically visit sea lion colonies on small rocky islands and circle Lighthouse Les Eclaireurs. Full-day trips may go further to Martillo Island to see Magellanic and gentoo penguins. Along the way, you might spot imperial cormorants, skuas, and even whales. The channel provides views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers.

Winter Activities

While summer is peak tourist season, Ushuaia also draws visitors in winter (June-September) for skiing and winter sports. Cerro Castor, 26 km from the city, is the world's southernmost ski resort. It has 28 runs for all skill levels. You can also try activities like dog sledding, snowshoeing, and winter hiking. The short winter days are compensated by the chance to see the southern lights (aurora australis) on clear nights.

Local Cuisine

Ushuaia's cuisine reflects its coastal location and cold climate. King crab (centolla) is a local specialty, often served in empanadas or as part of the seafood stew called chupe de centolla. You'll also find Fuegian lamb, grilled trout, and hearty stews on many menus. For dessert, try calafate berry ice cream. The berry is said to ensure your return to Patagonia. Ushuaia also has a growing craft beer scene and several wine bars featuring Argentine vintages.

Preparing for Antarctic Expeditions

Many travelers use Ushuaia as a departure point for cruises to Antarctica. The city's port is busy during the Antarctic summer (November-March) with expedition ships heading south across the Drake Passage. If you're embarking on an Antarctic trip, you can find polar gear in Ushuaia's many outdoor shops. The Museo Marítimo y del Presidio de Ushuaia, housed in the former prison, has exhibits on Antarctic exploration that can help you prepare for your journey.
