San José de Jáchal sits in Argentina's San Juan province, at the foot of the Andes where the Jáchal River flows. You can soak in 24°C thermal springs, catch mackerel at Los Cauquenes Dam, or cycle through agricultural valleys past olive groves and fruit orchards. The stone-built Templo de San José, dating from 1785, anchors the city center, while hiking and climbing routes spread across the nearby mountains.

Getting There and Around

San José de Jáchal is 166 kilometers from Domingo Faustino Sarmiento Airport in San Juan. Find the city's bus terminal at Presidente Perón and Laprida streets, with regular connections to major Argentine cities. National Route 40 runs through the city, making it easy to drive from both north and south.

Climate and Best Time to Visit

The area gets about 123 millimeters of rain annually with 7.7 hours of daily sunshine. While you can visit year-round, summer temperatures often exceed 30°C. Spring (September-November) and fall (March-May) bring milder temperatures ideal for hiking and cycling.

Water Activities at Los Cauquenes Dam

At Los Cauquenes Dam, you can fish for mackerel, go boating, or water ski. The dam has designated camping areas for overnight stays. The water is typically calm in the morning, making it good for beginners learning water sports.

Thermal Springs of Huaco

The Termas de Agua Hedionda thermal springs lie 30 kilometers from the city center on provincial route 491. These 24°C springs open during summer months (December-March) and sit within the red-and-yellow rock formations of Huaco Ravine at 1,100 meters altitude. Visit the nearby 300-year-old water mill, which still has its original stone grinding wheels.

Religious Architecture

The Templo de San José, a National Historical Monument from 1785, has thick stone walls and wooden beam ceilings typical of colonial architecture. The temple's parish hall hosted regional political meetings during Argentina's independence movement. You can visit daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Green Circuit and Valley Exploration

Cycle the Green Circuit through Jáchal and Churches valleys to see local communities and farms. The route passes through Huerta de Huachi, where you'll see apple, peach, and olive trees growing on terraced hillsides. The municipal swimming pool in Huerta de Huachi opens daily in summer from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
