Feldkirch, Austria's westernmost city, sits at the intersection of Austria, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. This medieval town has a historic core with narrow cobblestone streets and buildings dating back to the Middle Ages. You can explore the 13th-century Schattenburg Castle, walk through the Gothic St. Nikolaus Cathedral, or attend a concert at the modern Montforthaus. Feldkirch's location makes it a convenient starting point for trips to nearby countries and the Austrian Alps.

Wandering Through Feldkirch's Medieval Streets

Feldkirch's Old Town has narrow cobblestone streets lined with buildings from the medieval period. As you walk through the compact historic center, you'll see fountains and buildings decorated with frescoes. The Marktgasse, or Market Street, forms the main artery of the Old Town. Here, you can experience the twice-weekly market, where local vendors sell fresh produce, flowers, and regional specialties.

Exploring Schattenburg Castle and Museum

Schattenburg Castle sits on a hill overlooking the town, serving as Feldkirch's most prominent landmark. The Counts of Montfort built this fortress in the early 13th century and lived here for over two centuries. Today, you can visit the castle museum, which has 18 rooms with exhibits on local history and medieval life. After your visit, you can eat traditional Austrian dishes at the castle restaurant while looking out over Feldkirch and the surrounding mountains.

Visiting St. Nikolaus Cathedral and Katzenturm

The Gothic St. Nikolaus Cathedral stands in the center of Feldkirch, with its green spire visible from many parts of town. Inside, you'll find stained glass windows and a wooden ceiling. Nearby, the Katzenturm, or Cat's Tower, is a 16th-century defensive structure that was part of the old city walls. It now contains Vorarlberg's largest bell. You can climb to the top for a view of the Old Town below.

Experiencing Modern Culture at Montforthaus

In contrast to Feldkirch's medieval architecture, the Montforthaus represents the town's contemporary side. This cultural center, with its curved stone and glass exterior, hosts concerts, theater productions, and exhibitions throughout the year. Even if you don't attend an event, you can visit to see the building's design and eat at the rooftop restaurant overlooking the Old Town.

Observing Wildlife at Wildpark Feldkirch

For a nature break, visit Wildpark Feldkirch, located just outside the town center. This wildlife park allows you to see native Alpine animals in their habitats. As you walk along the forest trails, you might see red deer, lynx, wild boars, and various bird species. The park also has a playground and picnic areas for families.

Taking Day Trips from Feldkirch

Feldkirch's location near Austria's borders with Switzerland and Liechtenstein allows for easy day trips. You can reach the principality of Liechtenstein by a 10-minute bus ride. For a longer trip, consider visiting Lake Constance (Bodensee), about an hour's drive north. At the lake, you can do water activities, visit the town of Bregenz, or take a cable car up Pfänder mountain for lake views.

Reaching and Moving Around Feldkirch

Trains connect Feldkirch to major cities like Zurich, Innsbruck, and Munich. The town is small enough to walk around, with most attractions in and near the Old Town. For longer distances or trips to neighboring countries, Feldkirch has a bus network. If you want to explore the wider region, renting a car allows you to visit nearby attractions and areas in the Austrian Alps.
