Flachau, a village in Austria's Salzburg state, welcomes skiers to its 210-kilometer network of slopes. You'll find families sledding at Wagrainis Winter World, hikers exploring the Griessenkar Adventure Mountain's trails, and ski enthusiasts racing down the same slopes where Olympic champion Hermann Maier trained. The 1722 parish church, with its striking altar paintings by Johann Michael Rottmayr, sits at the heart of this alpine community.

Getting to Flachau

You'll find Flachau 70 kilometers south of Salzburg. Take the A10 Tauern Autobahn and choose from three exits that lead directly to the ski lifts. If you prefer public transport, buses run regularly from anywhere in Salzburg province at no cost, supporting the area's CO2-neutral skiing initiative.

Winter Sports Infrastructure

The Snow Space Salzburg ski area links Flachau, Wagrain, and St. Johann with 85 lifts across 210 kilometers of slopes. Take the Panorama Link gondola to access neighboring Flachauwinkl and Zauchensee, where you can ski across 12 peaks and 5 valleys. Your single ski pass works throughout the entire connected area.

Family-Friendly Winter Activities

Children will find safety bars on all Snow Space Salzburg lifts. At Wagrainis Winter World, kids can ride the magic carpet lift, zoom down snow tubing runs, and check their speed at the mini-speed-check station. The beginners' Snowpark helps new skiers build confidence. Challenge your family to a race on the 530-meter Hermann Maier World Cup course or time yourself on the giant slalom track.

Summer Mountain Activities

From July through August, take Starjet 1 or Starjet 2 lifts to the Griessenkar Adventure Mountain between 9 AM and 5 PM daily. Walk the 3-kilometer Panorama Trail or challenge yourself on the Summit Path's steep terrain. Children can solve puzzles along Flori's Adventure Path near Starjet 1's top station and collect rewards at the tourism office.

Local Heritage

The 1722 parish church displays Johann Michael Rottmayr's detailed altar paintings. Winter sports run deep in Flachau's identity - Olympic gold medalist Hermann Maier learned to ski on these slopes, and world champion snowboarders Claudia and Manuela Riegler call this town home. Each winter, international athletes compete in the women's night slalom on Flachau's illuminated runs.
