A small town along the Neretva River, known for its 17th-century stone bridge and traditional woodcarving crafts. Home to Tito's secret Cold War bunker.
Konjic sits along the Neretva River, 60 kilometers southwest of Sarajevo. You can walk across the six-arched Stone Bridge from 1682, explore Tito's 6,500-square-meter nuclear bunker, or hike to the mountain village of Lukomir where residents still live in stone houses with cherry-wood roofs. The Neretva River draws rafters to its class II-IV rapids, while the 800-meter-deep Rakitnica Canyon attracts hikers and climbers.
Getting to Konjic
Konjic lies on the main road between Sarajevo and Mostar, making it easily accessible by bus or car. The journey from Sarajevo takes about an hour, while from Mostar it's a 90-minute drive. Regular buses run between these cities throughout the day, and the train line also passes through Konjic.
Walking the Old Town
The stone streets of Konjic's center follow both banks of the Neretva River. The Stone Bridge, built in 1682, connects the two sides with its six arches. Small cafes and shops line the main street, which becomes a pedestrian zone during summer evenings when locals meet for coffee.
Exploring ARK D-0 (Tito's Bunker)
This nuclear bunker inside a mountain near Konjic opened to the public in 2003. Built between 1953 and 1979, the 6,500-square-meter facility could house 350 people for six months. Now an art gallery, it hosts the Biennial of Contemporary Art. Tours run daily from 10:00 to 16:00 and take about 2 hours. Book your visit in advance through the museum's website.
Hiking to Lukomir
At 1,495 meters, Lukomir is Bosnia's highest village. Snow blocks access to the stone houses and their cherry-wood roofs from December through April. You can hike the 4-hour trail from the village along the rim of Rakitnica Canyon, where the walls drop 800 meters to the river below.
Woodcarving Workshops
Since the early 1900s, Konjic's woodcarvers have made furniture and decorative boxes with distinct patterns. Each family workshop developed its own designs, passing them through generations. You can visit active workshops to see artisans at work or buy handmade pieces.
River Activities
The Neretva River has rapids from class II to IV, good for both beginning and experienced rafters. The main rafting route runs 23 kilometers from Glavatičevo to Konjic. Local companies organize trips that include equipment and guides.
Mountain Trails
The mountains around Konjic have hundreds of kilometers of marked paths. The Prenj range rises above town with several peaks over 2,000 meters. Trails in the Bjelašnica and Visočica mountains follow the edge of Rakitnica Canyon, where you can walk 800 meters above the river.
