Armação dos Búzios, often simply called Búzios, is a coastal town in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro state. This former fishing village has grown into a popular beach destination with 23 distinct beaches along its 8-kilometer peninsula. You can relax on secluded coves, surf at Geribá Beach, or explore the lively Rua das Pedras. Búzios appeals to both Brazilian and international visitors looking for a beach getaway.

Discovering Búzios' Beaches

Búzios has 23 unique beaches, each with its own character. On the west coast, you'll find calm waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Families often visit João Fernandes and Ferradura beaches. The east coast faces the open sea, where you'll see more surfers and water sports activities. Geribá Beach is known for its waves and active surfing community. For a quieter experience, visit Azeda or Azedinha beaches, where you can swim in clear waters surrounded by green hills.

Evening Activities on Rua das Pedras

As evening approaches, Rua das Pedras, the main street in town, becomes active. This cobblestone street is lined with restaurants, bars, and shops. You can start your evening with a drink at one of the beachfront bars, then enjoy dinner at a local seafood restaurant. Later, you'll hear music playing from various clubs. Some popular venues include Privilege, Pátio Havana, and Zapata.

Traveling to Búzios

Búzios is located about 170 kilometers east of Rio de Janeiro. The most common way to reach Búzios is by bus or car from Rio. Regular buses depart from Rio's main bus terminal, with the journey taking about 3-4 hours depending on traffic. If you want more flexibility, you can rent a car and drive along the coastal road. For those with limited time, there are small aircraft services to Umberto Modiano Airport, though these are less frequent and more expensive.

When to Visit

Búzios has a tropical climate with warm temperatures throughout the year. The warmest and most crowded months are from December to February, which coincide with the Brazilian summer and holiday season. From March to May or September to November, you'll find more comfortable temperatures and lower prices. During these periods, you can still enjoy beach activities with fewer people around. The winter months (June to August) are the coolest but still warm enough for the beach, with temperatures around 20°C (68°F).
