Monte Verde, a mountain village in Brazil's Minas Gerais state, sits at 1,555 meters above sea level in the Serra da Mantiqueira mountains. This small town of 5,000 residents has hiking trails leading to 2,000-meter peaks and German-style architecture with dark wooden beams and red-brick walls. In winter, temperatures can drop to -10°C. You can watch black-jacobin hummingbirds feed on native flowers, taste fresh olive oil at family farms, or walk among 1,500 species of orchids at the town's botanical garden.

Getting to Monte Verde

Monte Verde lies 165 kilometers from São Paulo and 484 kilometers from Belo Horizonte. Take the BR-381 highway to Camanducaia, then follow the winding mountain road to Monte Verde. Daily buses run from São Paulo to Camanducaia, with connecting services to Monte Verde running several times per day.

Weather and When to Visit

From April to August, daytime temperatures range from 0-15°C, often dropping below freezing at night. These winter months bring the most visitors, and accommodation prices increase. Summer (December to March) sees daily afternoon rainfall and temperatures between 15-25°C, with fewer people on the trails and at viewpoints.

Mountain Trails

Five main trails wind through the mountains. The Pedra Redonda trail extends 2 kilometers with 110 meters of elevation gain, ending at a rounded rock formation. The Pico do Selado trail runs 8.5 kilometers to the region's highest peak at 2,082 meters, passing through dense forest and rocky outcrops. The 2.5-kilometer Platô trail crosses a rock plateau with views of the Mantiqueira range.

Plants and Animals

The mountains contain sections of Atlantic rainforest with native araucaria trees alongside pine and eucalyptus groves. At the Orchidarium, you'll find 1,500 orchid species and 150 types of carnivorous plants. Black-jacobin hummingbirds feed on native flowers throughout the day, while saffron toucanets call from the forest canopy.

Adventure Activities

At Fazenda Radical, you can ride ziplines ranging from 100 to 500 meters long, climb through tree-top courses, or take UTV rides on forest trails. Oschin Park spans 45,000 square meters with walking paths, a playground, and lakeside picnic areas. At Fazenda Pica-Pau, you can learn about olive growing and watch the oil pressing process.

Local Architecture and Food

Monte Verde Avenue has two-story buildings with wooden balconies and 45-degree angle roofs, reflecting German building techniques. The Fritz Brewery makes wheat beers and dark lagers using recipes from southern Germany. During winter, restaurants serve cheese fondue, wine fondue, and regional Minas Gerais cheeses.

Probably the coldest place in Brazil, great food. However, there is a lack of care with public roads, many parts of the city have not been 100% built and the city lacks basic infrastructure in some areas. I feel like the entire city was built just for tourists to take photos of specific places (which are beautiful) and post them on Instagram, but the rest of the city (which doesn't appear in the photos) is horrible.
