Niterói is a Brazilian city located in the state of Rio de Janeiro. It is considered a middle-class city in the country, and is the most populous municipality in the state, with about 1.3 million inhabitants. The city is located on the eastern side of Guanabara Bay, and is linked to Rio de Janeiro by the Rio-Niterói bridge.
The city is well known for its art, including its sculptures and for its annual carnival parade, the Banda de Ipanema. It is also known for its annual celebration of the independence of Brazil, on September 7.
