Ribeirão Preto is a city in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. It is the largest city and the economic and cultural center of the Ribeirão Preto metropolitan area, which includes the municipalities of Araraquara, Barretos, Franca, Jaboticabal, São José do Rio Preto and Serrana. The population of the city was 1,539,039 in the 2010 census. The city has an area of 1,545.7 km².
Ribeirão Preto is an important center of Brazilian medical care and research, having some of the largest hospitals and research centers in the country. The city is also a major center of higher education, being home to four universities and a large number of colleges and technical schools. The city's economy is based on agriculture, industry and services.
