Location in the Canadian Rockies

Canmore is situated in the Bow Valley of Alberta, approximately 80 km west of Calgary and 20 km east of Banff. The town is surrounded by craggy peaks, including the Three Sisters and Ha Ling Peak. At an elevation of 1,309 meters, Canmore has a mountain climate with warm summers and snowy winters. The Bow River flows through the town, with walking paths along its banks providing scenic views.

Year-Round Mountain Activities

Canmore's mountain setting allows for varied recreation throughout the year. In summer, you can explore extensive trail networks with routes for all abilities, from easy walks to challenging summit climbs. The Nordic Centre and surrounding areas have mountain biking trails. Limestone cliffs in the area are popular among rock climbers. Winter activities include downhill skiing at nearby resorts, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice climbing.

Olympic-Legacy Nordic Centre

The Canmore Nordic Centre is a year-round destination for cross-country skiers and other athletes. Built for the 1988 Winter Olympics, it now hosts World Cup events and has over 60 km of groomed trails. During summer, you can use the trails for mountain biking, trail running, and roller skiing. The centre includes a day lodge with equipment rentals, lessons, and a café. Many elite athletes train at the centre throughout the year.

Downtown Canmore

Canmore's walkable downtown area along Main Street (8th Street) and surrounding blocks has a relaxed mountain town atmosphere. You can browse locally-owned shops selling outdoor gear, artwork, and gifts. Dining options range from casual cafes to upscale restaurants, with many establishments featuring patios with mountain views. On Thursday afternoons in summer, the Canmore Mountain Market brings together local food producers and artisans.

Wildlife Viewing Opportunities

The Bow Valley is an important habitat for wildlife, and animal sightings are common around Canmore. Elk often graze in town, especially during spring and fall. You might see bighorn sheep on rocky slopes or near mineral licks. Black bears and grizzlies inhabit the surrounding mountains and forests. For the best chances of seeing wildlife safely, consider joining a guided tour or visiting during quieter times of day.

Getting to Canmore

Canmore is easily accessible, located just over an hour's drive west of Calgary along the Trans-Canada Highway. Calgary International Airport has flights from major cities. Once in Canmore, a free local bus system helps you move around town. Having a car allows you to explore the surrounding area, but be prepared for winter driving conditions from October to April. Shuttle services connect Canmore to Calgary airport and nearby ski resorts.
