Locarno is a small town in southern Switzerland with a population of just over 16,000. It is located on the shores of Lake Maggiore and is a popular tourist destination, thanks to its mild climate, stunning lakeside setting and well-preserved medieval core. The old town is a labyrinth of narrow streets and squares, overlooked by the imposing Castello Visconteo. There are a wealth of churches and other historic buildings to explore, as well as a wide range of restaurants, bars and shops. Locarno is also a popular base for exploring the surrounding area, which is home to some of the most beautiful scenery in Switzerland.
