Grand-Bassam

Colonial town meets traditional Nzema village.

Grand-Bassam is a city on the Ivory Coast, lying east of Abidjan. Formerly the colonial capital of the country, it is now a historical site. The city was founded in 1645 by the Dutch, and became an important center of the slave trade. It was also a major center of the French colonial administration. After independence, it became the capital of the Republic of Ivory Coast. The city was heavily damaged during the country's civil war, and has been partially rebuilt.
