Dongguan sits in China's Pearl River Delta between Hong Kong and Guangzhou. Walk through the 19th-century Keyuan Garden with its stone bridges and pavilions, watch a Cantonese opera at the Yulan Theater, or explore the art galleries and music venues in Xiabafang's converted factory buildings. The city's position makes it an easy stop for travelers moving between Hong Kong and mainland China.

Getting to Dongguan

You can reach Dongguan from Hong Kong via train, bus, or ferry. Take the Mass Transit Railway service from Hong Kong's Hung Hom station directly to Dongguan without stopping for immigration. From abroad, fly into Hong Kong International Airport, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, or Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport - all within 90 minutes of the city.

Local Transportation

Move around the city using buses, taxis, and the subway system. The subway connects all major districts with trains running from 6:30 AM to 11:00 PM daily. Buy a Dongguan Transit Card to save time and money on public transport.

Cultural Venues and Events

Watch traditional Cantonese opera performances at the Yulan Theater, or catch a basketball game at the 16,000-seat Dongguan Basketball Center. Time your visit with the Lingnan Arts Festival in January to see local dance and music performances, or the Tangxia Band Festival in October for live rock and indie music shows.

Xiabafang Arts District

Walk through Xiabafang's converted factory buildings in Bato Village to find art galleries, music venues, and craft workshops. After 6 PM, the streets fill with people heading to the area's restaurants and bars. Local artists often set up temporary exhibitions in the outdoor spaces.

Food Scene

Try fresh seafood caught along the city's 116-kilometer coastline or seasonal fruits like lychee and longan. Visit the night markets to taste Cantonese specialties such as spicy oysters and five-spice goose. The most active food streets are in the Humen and Dongcheng districts, where vendors set up from 5 PM until late.

Shopping Districts

Browse through the New South China Mall's international retail stores and local boutiques. In Humen town, explore more than 1,000 clothing shops and wholesale markets selling everything from casual wear to formal attire. Local designers run small shops throughout the Dongcheng district.

Best Time to Visit

Plan your trip for September or October when temperatures range between 20-25°C (68-77°F) and humidity levels are lower. These months typically have clear skies and dry weather, ideal for walking around the city.

Historical Sites

Learn about 19th-century Chinese history at the Humen Naval Battle Museum and Opium War Museum. Walk through Keyuan Garden to see Ming and Qing dynasty architecture, including ornate wooden carvings and traditional stone bridges. Both museums display original artifacts and weapons from the Opium War period.
