Guiyang

Catholic churches and the world's smelliest cheese

The capital of Guizhou province has a modern central square, Buddhist temples, and a growing tech industry. Cool mountain climate and Qingyan Ancient Town draw visitors.

Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou province, sits at an elevation of 1,100 meters in southwestern China. You'll find food vendors grilling spicy mutton chops on Shaanxi Road, monkeys roaming freely in Qianling Park, and Ming Dynasty architecture in the stone-walled Qingyan Ancient Town. The red-pillared Jiaxiu Pavilion, built in 1598, still watches over the Nanming River from its perch on stone columns.

Getting to Guiyang

Longdongbao International Airport connects Guiyang with major Chinese cities through multiple daily flights from Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. You can reach downtown in 20 minutes by taxi or airport shuttle bus. Trains run to Chongqing (12 hours) and Kunming (overnight).

Moving Around the City

Three metro lines, opened between 2017 and 2023, connect major districts of Guiyang. The extensive bus system reaches most neighborhoods, though signs and announcements are in Chinese. Many residents use DiDi, the Chinese ride-sharing app, which you can access with an English interface.

Local Food and Markets

On Shaanxi Road, food vendors set up their stalls after sunset, filling the air with smoke from grilled mutton chops and baked snails. At Bo'ai Road's evening market, cooks prepare Fish in sour soup and Siwawa (thin rice rolls filled with vegetables). Along Qianling East Road, you'll find restaurants serving Moutai grain liquor, produced in nearby distilleries.

Parks and Natural Areas

In Qianling Park, walking paths lead you past groups of wild monkeys to Hongfu Temple and several city viewpoints. At Huaxi National Wetland Park, wooden boardwalks cross through reed beds and water gardens where you can spot local birds. Tianhetan, 30 minutes from downtown, contains walkable limestone caves and streams cascading over rock formations.

Historical Sites

The Jiaxiu Pavilion stands on stone pillars above the Nanming River, its red columns and curved roof reconstructed in 1982 to match the original 1598 design. In Qingyan Ancient Town, 29 kilometers south of Guiyang, you can walk through narrow streets lined with Ming Dynasty buildings and climb defensive walls built from local stone.

Shopping Districts

On Beijing Road, you'll find craftspeople selling carved wooden items and Miao silver jewelry. Zhonghua Road contains department stores and electronics shops. After sunset, Zhongshan Road transforms into a night market where vendors sell clothes, accessories, and street food until midnight.
