Tropical city on Hainan Island with beaches and resorts. Home to Nanshan Temple and sea turtles. Popular among Russian tourists. Best visited November to April.
Sanya, located on the southern tip of Hainan Island, is China's main tropical beach destination. With its year-round warm climate, Sanya draws millions of visitors annually. You can sunbathe on Yalong Bay's white sand beaches, explore the rainforests of Yanoda Tropical Rainforest Park, learn about Li and Miao cultures at Binglanggu Valley, or indulge in fresh seafood at Sanya Bay restaurants. The city also houses the world's largest duty-free shopping complex at Haitang Bay.
Beaches and Bays
Sanya's 200-kilometer coastline includes several distinct beaches and bays. At Yalong Bay, you'll find soft white sand and clear turquoise waters, often frequented by luxury travelers. Dadonghai Beach, closer to the city center, has many water sports options and beachfront bars. For a calmer experience, visit the newer Haitang Bay, where you'll find high-end resorts and an extensive duty-free shopping complex.
Water Activities and Diving
You can enjoy various water activities in Sanya's warm, clear waters. At Wuzhizhou Island, you can snorkel or scuba dive to observe coral reefs and tropical fish. The Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) offers short diving courses for beginners, allowing you to explore underwater environments even without prior experience. If you prefer staying above water, you can try jet-skiing, parasailing, and banana boat rides at most beaches.
Climate and Best Time to Visit
Sanya has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round, averaging around 25°C (77°F). From November to April, you'll typically experience drier and less humid weather. However, this is also the peak tourist season, especially during Chinese New Year when prices increase and visitor numbers are highest. If you don't mind occasional rain showers, visiting in May-June or September-October can offer a balance of good weather and fewer tourists.
Getting Around
You can use Sanya's well-developed public transportation system to explore the city. Buses provide an affordable way to travel between different beaches and sites, with routes connecting major areas like Sanya Bay, Dadonghai, and Yalong Bay. Taxis are common, but make sure the driver uses the meter. For a different perspective, try Sanya's tram service, which runs from the railway station to Jiangang Road Station. Many resorts also offer shuttle services to popular destinations.
Local Cuisine
In Sanya, you can taste fresh seafood and tropical fruits. Try the Hainanese chicken rice, made with locally raised chicken. At restaurants along Sanya Bay, you can select live seafood and have it cooked to your preferences. The tropical climate contributes to the flavor of local fruits like mangoes, coconuts, and dragonfruit, which you'll find particularly tasty.
