Alajuela, Costa Rica's second-largest city, lies 20 kilometers northwest of San José in the Central Valley. Walk through the central park where century-old mango trees shade local families, visit the red-domed Our Lady of the Pillar Cathedral, or explore the Juan Santamaría Museum in its former prison building. You can take day trips to see the active crater at Poás Volcano, learn about coffee production at nearby plantations, or watch rescued wildlife at Zoo Ave.

Getting to Alajuela

Juan Santamaría International Airport is 3 kilometers from downtown Alajuela. You can reach the city from San José by train, bus, or car via the General Cañas highway. Many buses to northwestern Costa Rica depart from Alajuela's terminal.

Weather and Climate in Alajuela

Temperatures range between 23-26°C (73-79°F) year-round, with moderate humidity. The dry season runs from December to April, while September and October see the heaviest rainfall. You can visit Alajuela comfortably in any season.

Exploring Central Park

More than 20 mango trees, planted over a century ago, create natural shade throughout the park. Local residents gather here during afternoons to chat and relax. Look up into the branches to spot sloths, and during mango season (May-July), you'll find ripe fruits on the ground.

Historical Buildings and Architecture

The Our Lady of the Pillar Cathedral stands on the eastern side of Central Park, with its red dome visible across the city center. The Juan Santamaría Historical Museum, in a converted military garrison and prison building, displays weapons, uniforms, and documents from Costa Rica's 1856 campaign. Visit Tuesday through Sunday with free admission.

Markets and Local Food Scene

Walk through the Central Market, which fills an entire block west of the park, to find fresh produce, traditional foods, and local crafts. The surrounding streets have small coffee shops and restaurants where you can try Costa Rican dishes like gallo pinto and casado.

Day Trips from Alajuela

At Doka Estate on the slopes of Poás Volcano, you can watch the complete coffee-making process from growing to roasting. Zoo Ave, 8 kilometers west in La Garita, cares for 130 animal species in its wildlife center and botanical gardens. To visit Poás Volcano National Park, 30 kilometers north, book your time slot in advance through SINAC's website.

Cultural Events

Join the Juan Santamaría Day celebrations each April 11th with parades and street performances. In July, the Mango Festival brings music performances, food vendors, and cultural activities to the city center, where you can experience traditional Costa Rican music, dance, and food.
