Jacó, a coastal town on Costa Rica's Central Pacific coast, lies 1.5 hours from San Jose International Airport. The gray-sand beach stretches along a wide cove with rocky points on each end, bordered by green hills and jungle. In the area, you can watch scarlet macaws soar through Carara National Park, learn to surf on beginner-friendly waves, or climb to the clifftop amphitheater at Hotel Villa Caletas for panoramic ocean views.

Getting to Jacó

You can reach Jacó from San Jose International Airport in about 1.5 hours via the Caldera Highway. Choose between private transfers, shared shuttles, or rental cars. The paved highway has clear signage, making Jacó one of the easiest beach towns to reach from the capital.

Surfing and Beach Activities

The main beach extends for 4 kilometers with waves suitable for both beginners and intermediate surfers. Local surf schools line the beach, providing board rentals and lessons. Head to Playa Hermosa, 8 kilometers south, for bigger swells and stronger currents better suited to experienced surfers.

Wildlife at Carara National Park

At Carara National Park, 35 kilometers north of Jacó, you can walk through primary and secondary rainforest on wheelchair-accessible trails. The park houses one of Costa Rica's largest wild scarlet macaw populations. Look for white-faced monkeys, leaf-cutter ants, and tropical birds during your walk.

Day Trips and Activities

Take a 45-minute boat ride from Los Suenos Marina to Tortuga Island for snorkeling and white sand beaches. Ride the Pacific Rainforest Aerial Tram in the mountains outside town for views above the jungle canopy. Local operators run ATV tours, zip-line courses, and sport fishing trips.

Weather and When to Visit

Temperatures range between 24-32°C (75-90°F) year-round. The dry season runs from December through early April. Expect regular rainfall from August through early December, though mornings typically stay clear with rain falling in the afternoon.

Nightlife and Entertainment

Avenue Pastor Diaz, the main street, fills with activity after dark. You'll find dance clubs, casual beach bars, and upscale lounges throughout town. Visit the farmers market every Thursday afternoon and Friday morning to browse local produce and crafts.

Safety and Practical Information

Take standard safety precautions in Jacó, especially at night. Most businesses accept US dollars and Costa Rican colones. You'll find several ATMs throughout town, and many restaurants have WiFi. Stick to bottled water for drinking, though most restaurants use purified ice.
