Annaba is a city in northeastern Algeria on the Gulf of Annaba, near the border with Tunisia. It has a population of approximately 528,000. The city was founded by the Phoenicians in the 4th century BC as Hippo Regius. It was renamed Annaba in 1957. The city is a main seaport and the administrative and economic capital of the wilaya (province) of Annaba.
