Sillamäe is a small town in northeastern Estonia on the coast of the Gulf of Finland. It is the country's most important industrial center, producing oil shale, copper, and other minerals. The town was founded in 1897 as a Russian naval base and port. After Estonia regained its independence in 1991, the Russian military installations were closed, and the town's economy declined. In the early 21st century, however, the town's economy revived with the development of new mineral processing plants.
