A small medieval town in northern Spain's Cantabria region, surrounded by limestone peaks of Picos de Europa. Its stone bridges and 15th-century Tower of Infantado mark the historic center.
Potes lies at the intersection of four valleys in northern Spain's Cantabria region. Stone bridges arch over the Quiviesa and Deva rivers, while medieval alleys lead past stone houses to the Torre del Infantado fortress. In the surrounding Picos de Europa mountains, you'll find hiking trails to Santo Toribio monastery and Fuente Dé cable car station. Stop by the Monday market to taste local Cocido Lebaniego stew and watch farmers sell their homemade Orujo grape brandy.
Medieval Streets of Potes
Walk through stone-paved alleys and stairways between buildings made of golden-colored stone. The Torre del Infantado rises four stories above the main square, its corner turrets visible throughout town. Step inside to see the collection of illuminated manuscripts from the Commentary of the Apocalypse. Climb to the tower's top level for views across the four valleys and mountain peaks.
Bridges and Rivers
Cross the Quiviesa River on medieval stone bridges that connect different neighborhoods. The San Cayetano Bridge, built in the 13th century, leads to its namesake chapel where you'll find an ornate 18th-century altarpiece. Walk across the La Cárcel Bridge to reach the shopping streets from the residential area.
Local Food and Drinks
Try Cocido Lebaniego, a hearty stew made with chickpeas, cabbage, and three types of meat. Visit cheese makers in nearby Pido who age their products in mountain caves. The valley's warm microclimate supports vineyards that produce grapes for Orujo brandy. Sample this strong spirit during November's Fiesta del Orujo, when distillers demonstrate traditional production methods.
Religious Festivals
Join locals celebrating Saint Vincent on January 23rd, when traditional dancers perform in the streets. Watch the Santuca procession in early May as residents carry the statue of Virgen de la Luz from its chapel to Santo Toribio de Liebana. During September's Exaltation of the Cross festival, pilgrims come to see the claimed fragment of the True Cross at the monastery.
Walking in Picos de Europa
Take the 6-kilometer path to Santo Toribio monastery, following stone markers through oak woods. For more challenging walks, head toward Fuente Dé and ride the cable car to start high-altitude hikes. Walk the 16-kilometer circular route to Tudes village, passing through meadows with views of the Liébana Valley.
Getting There and When to Visit
Drive 100 kilometers from Santander via the N-621 road to reach Potes. Plan your visit between May and October for the most stable weather conditions. The Monday market fills the main square and surrounding streets with local producers. Most shops and businesses in the town center close for siesta between 2 PM and 5 PM.
