Auch is a small town in the Gers department in the Occitanie region of south-western France. It is the historical capital of the Gascony region. The town is located on the banks of the Gers River. Auch is the birthplace of French writer and philosopher Michel de Montaigne. The old town is well preserved and has a number of interesting buildings, including the Gothic Cathédrale Sainte-Marie. There are also a number of small shops and restaurants in the old town. The town is a convenient base for exploring the surrounding countryside, including the Pyrenees Mountains.
