La Roche-sur-Yon is a city in western France, in the Pays de la Loire region. It is the capital of the Vendée department. The city is built on the banks of the Yon River. La Roche-sur-Yon is a sub-prefecture of the department. The city was founded by Henri IV, Duke of Vendôme, in 1599. The population of La Roche-sur-Yon was 89,821 in 2012, down from 92,645 in 1999.
