The largest town in Somerset has a 10th-century castle, traditional cider farms, and weekly markets at Fore Street. Home to Somerset Cricket Club since 1882.
Taunton, the county town of Somerset, lies between three hills along the River Tone. Walk through medieval streets where independent shops occupy Victorian buildings, climb the 163-foot tower of St Mary Magdalene Church, or explore the 12th-century castle that now houses geological exhibits and Roman artifacts. In summer, you can watch cricket matches at the County Ground or join locals at the annual flower show in Vivary Park.
Train and Road Connections
You can reach Taunton from London Paddington in 2 hours 5 minutes by train. Bristol is 35 minutes away by rail, while Exeter takes 25 minutes. If driving, take M5 motorway exit 25. Both Bristol and Exeter airports are 35 miles from town.
Historic Town Buildings
The red brick Market House (1772) anchors the town center, where merchants still sell local produce. Bath Place retains its Victorian character with antique shops, bookstores, and cafes behind 19th-century facades. Climb the 163-foot tower of St Mary Magdalene Church - the highest in Somerset - for views across town. Inside Taunton Castle, the Museum of Somerset displays Roman coins found in nearby villages, medieval weapons, and fossils from the Quantock Hills.
Vivary Park Activities
The 19-acre Vivary Park contains the winding Sherford Stream, four tennis courts, and two children's play areas. Children can ride the miniature railway that winds through the park. Visit in August for the Taunton Flower Show, which has filled the park with displays since 1866. From the park, you can walk or cycle along the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal towpath.
Sports and Shows
The County Ground comes alive during summer cricket matches when Somerset County Cricket Club plays home games. Watch professional theater productions at the Brewhouse Theatre, which also stages work by local drama groups. From October to March, you can attend jump racing events at Taunton Racecourse, located two miles south of town.
Local Transportation
Take the Taunton Flyer park and ride from Silk Mills into the town center - buses run every 15 minutes. Bus route 21 connects to Bridgwater, while route 28 goes to Wellington. During busy shopping periods or match days, the park and ride helps you avoid town center parking challenges.
