Gori, a city in eastern Georgia, is known for its connection to Joseph Stalin and ancient rock settlements. Visit the Stalin Museum to learn about the Soviet leader's life, explore the medieval Gori Fortress, or venture to the nearby Uplistsikhe cave city. Gori's landscape includes Soviet-era architecture alongside Orthodox churches, representing various periods in Georgian history.

Stalin Museum and Birthplace

The Stalin Museum occupies the center of Gori. It houses over 60,000 items related to Stalin's life, including his personal belongings and furniture. The museum complex includes Stalin's armored railway carriage and the small house where he spent his childhood. While the exhibits provide a detailed account of the Soviet leader's life, they may not present a balanced view of Stalin's legacy.

Gori Fortress

The 13th-century Gori Fortress sits atop a hill in the city center. From its walls, you can see panoramic views of Gori and the Caucasus Mountains. The fortress entrance fee is approximately 5 lari. This medieval structure showcases Georgian defensive architecture and underscores Gori's strategic significance throughout history.

Uplistsikhe Cave City

About 10 km east of Gori lies Uplistsikhe, an ancient city carved into rock 3,000 years ago. This multi-level settlement was a cultural center in pre-Christian Georgia. Explore the remains of homes, temples, and a large hall with a stone ceiling. To reach Uplistsikhe, take a marshrutka from Stalin Avenue in Gori for 1 lari each way.

Local Churches

The 12th-century Gorisjvari church, located 4 km from the city center, is a significant Orthodox Christian site. Nearby stands the 7th-century Ateni Sioni Church, another notable religious building. Both churches feature medieval Georgian architecture and religious art. When visiting, dress modestly. Women should cover their heads and wear longer skirts.

Getting to Gori

You can reach Gori from Tbilisi, Georgia's capital, through various means. Marshrutkas (minibuses) run frequently between Tbilisi's Didube market and Gori's central square. The trip takes about an hour and costs 5 lari. For more comfort, take a taxi or rent a car, which will take around 1.5 hours. Trains also connect Tbilisi and Gori, offering views of the Georgian countryside during the journey.

Local Cuisine

Gori has several cafes and restaurants serving traditional Georgian food. Try khachapuri, a bread filled with cheese, and khinkali, dumplings containing meat or vegetables. Visit the Sameba grocery store on Stalin Avenue to buy water, snacks, and local pastries. While Gori has limited nightlife options, many restaurants double as bars in the evening.
