Location and Landscape
Risnjak National Park covers 63.5 square kilometers in northwestern Croatia, about 15 km inland from the Adriatic coast. The park encompasses the central part of the Risnjak and Snježnik mountain ranges, with elevations ranging from 290 m to 1,528 m at the summit of Mount Risnjak. Limestone and dolomite form the bedrock, creating a dramatic karst landscape of craggy peaks, sinkholes, and underground caves. Dense forests of beech and fir blanket much of the terrain.
Rich Biodiversity
Despite its relatively small size, Risnjak has high biodiversity due to its position at the intersection of several climate zones. Over 1,100 plant species grow here, including many rare alpine flowers. Large carnivores like the brown bear, wolf, and Eurasian lynx roam the park. Birdwatchers can spot over 100 species, while the Kupa River valley has many colorful butterflies. Risnjak's intact ecosystems serve as an important refuge for wildlife.
Hiking to Mount Risnjak
The hike to Mount Risnjak's 1,528 m summit attracts many visitors. From the main entrance near Crni Lug village, well-marked trails wind through forests and meadows to reach the peak in about 3 hours. At the top, you'll find a mountain hut and sweeping views of the Adriatic Sea, Istria, and the Julian Alps on clear days. The final ascent involves some scrambling over rocks but is manageable for most hikers. Bring plenty of water and sturdy shoes.
Source of the Kupa River
At Risnjak's lowest point lies one of its most distinctive sights - the source of the Kupa River. A circular turquoise pool marks where the river emerges from an underground spring, forming a natural amphitheater surrounded by cliffs. The depth remains unknown despite numerous diving expeditions. An easy 30-minute walk from the village of Razloge leads to viewing platforms above the spring. The lush valley around the source is nicknamed the "Enchanted Butterfly Valley" for its abundance of butterfly species.
When to Visit
Risnjak experiences a mix of continental and mountain climates, with warm summers and snowy winters. July and August have the most reliable weather for hiking, but also the most visitors. Spring and fall can be pleasant, with colorful foliage and fewer people. Winters bring deep snow, attracting cross-country skiers and winter hikers. Check conditions before visiting outside summer, as some trails may be inaccessible. The park is open year-round.
Getting There and Fees
The main entrance to Risnjak National Park is located 1 km west of Crni Lug village. If driving from Zagreb or Rijeka, take the A6 highway and exit at Delnice, then follow signs to Crni Lug. Public buses run to Crni Lug from Rijeka. Park entrance fees are 45 HRK for adults and 25 HRK for students. Tickets are valid for two days. You can purchase them at the park entrance or visitor center in Crni Lug.
