Canggu stretches along 10 kilometers of Bali's southwest coast, encompassing nine black sand beaches. At Batu Bolong Beach, you'll find surfers catching waves near the Old Man's beer garden, while ancient temples dot the coastline. Inland, rice farmers still tend their paddies between cafes and modern buildings along streets like Jalan Batu Bolong.

Getting to Canggu from the Airport

You can reach Canggu from Ngurah Rai International Airport in 45-90 minutes, depending on traffic. Book a taxi at the official airport stand, use ride-hailing apps, or arrange a transfer through your accommodation. Many villas include free airport pickup for stays of four nights or longer.

Canggu's Nine Beaches

Each beach in Canggu has its own character. At Batu Bolong Beach, beginners practice surfing near a centuries-old temple. Advanced surfers head to Echo Beach for its reef breaks. Berawa Beach sees fewer visitors throughout the day, while locals frequent Pererenan Beach. The black volcanic sand and offshore currents make these beaches more suitable for surfing than swimming.

Transportation Options in Canggu

Move between Canggu's spread-out areas on a rented scooter. If you prefer not to drive, hire a private driver who will wait while you explore. The main roads - Jalan Batu Bolong, Jalan Padang Linjong, and Jalan Tanah Barak - experience slow traffic between 4 PM and 7 PM.

Temples and Local Culture

Walk to Pura Tanah Lot temple during low tide, when a path appears across the water to its rock formation 300 meters offshore. Near Batu Bolong Beach, you can visit Pura Merajapati (the temple of the dead) and Pipitan Cemetery. Watch for daily ceremonies where locals place canang sari (flower offerings) at temples and street shrines.

Current Environmental Situation

Since 2020, new buildings have appeared across former rice fields. Recent water quality monitoring at Batu Bolong Beach detected E. coli, with ongoing testing in place. Several rice farmers continue their work in the quieter inland areas, particularly beyond the main streets.

Food and Social Life

You'll find Indonesian food at local warungs and international restaurants throughout Canggu. Beach clubs like Finns and La Brisa host regular events. Shop for organic produce and crafts at La Brisa's Sunday market from 8 AM to 4 PM. The most active nights for socializing fall on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, when venues stay open until 3 AM.
