Sumatra is a wild and untamed place, a land of volcanoes, rainforests and elephants. The island is Indonesia’s sixth largest, and its most diverse, with a landscape that ranges from snow-capped peaks to steamy jungles. The people of Sumatra are equally varied, with dozens of different ethnic groups living in scattered villages across the island. The most famous Sumatrans are the orangutans, who can be found in the rainforests of the north and west. There are also tigers, rhinos and a host of other animals, all of which can be seen on jungle safaris or trekking trips. Away from the jungle, the beaches of Sumatra are some of the most beautiful in the world, with white sand and crystal-clear waters.
