Explore Pak Ou Caves in Laos: see over 4,000 Buddha statues by a river cliff, open daily for visits.
The Pak Ou Caves, located at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Ou rivers, are known for housing over 4,000 Buddha statues. To get to these caves, visitors take a boat trip that is a key part of the experience.
Those visiting Luang Prabang often go to the Pak Ou Caves for the religious atmosphere. The two main caves, Tham Ting (lower cave) and Tham Theung (upper cave), are situated in a limestone cliff above the rivers.
In Tham Ting, sunlight makes it easy to see a collection of Buddha figures, placed there by worshipers over time. The statues, different in style and age, show a continuing religious tradition. Tham Theung, located higher and more out of the way, requires artificial light to see the Buddha statues inside, providing a place for quiet thought.
The journey to Pak Ou offers a look at local life along the river. It's typical to visit villages along the way to see traditional crafts and local businesses, which adds to understanding of the area's nature and culture.
Visitors should know that the caves are open every day from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with a small entrance fee (about 20,000 Lao Kip or 2 USD). A flashlight is suggested for Tham Theung and sturdy shoes for going up to both caves. Since it is a holy place, visitors are expected to wear appropriate clothes and behave respectfully.
