Wat Xieng Thong

Luang Prabang's Wat Xieng Thong is a key piece of Laos' spiritual and architectural past. Located at the meeting point of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, this temple complex has stood since its founding in the 16th century. Its extensive roofs and detailed mosaics are major draws for visitors and a place of worship for locals.

Wat Xieng Thong, or the Temple of the Golden City, is an important symbol of Lao culture and religion. Its characteristic low-lying roofs, designed to shield the frescoes inside, almost reach the ground. The back wall of the main hall, or sim, presents a Tree of Life mosaic with colored glass, representing the Buddhist narrative.

Inside, the temple holds statues and paintings that mirror Buddhist and Lao traditions. An essential sight is the funeral chapel, which contains a rare reclining Buddha statue over 12 meters (39 feet) long, dated to the time the temple was built. The exterior of the chapel is remarkable, with glass mosaics and woodcarvings that tell stories of local and religious importance.

Visitors will find several stupas and shrine halls on the calm grounds, including the Red Chapel with its Buddha figures and a representation of the Buddha's footprint.
