Lovćen National Park rises above Montenegro's Adriatic coast, where limestone peaks reach 1,660 meters into the sky. You'll find centuries-old beech forests, a marble mausoleum with 461 steps to climb, and mountain villages where families still cure prosciutto using traditional methods. The park's hiking paths connect viewpoints where three countries meet: you can see Montenegro's Bay of Kotor, Albania's mountains, and, on clear days, the Italian coast across the Adriatic Sea.

Getting to Lovćen National Park

The park sits 20 kilometers from Kotor and 7 kilometers from Cetinje. While there's no public transportation, you can reach the park by car, organized tour, or by walking from Kotor. The mountain road winds through 25 hairpin turns, taking about 45 minutes from Kotor.

Mausoleum Views and Architecture

The Mausoleum of Petar II Petrović Njegoš sits atop Jezerski Peak at 1,660 meters. The 461 steps lead to a viewing platform where you can see the Durmitor mountains to the north, Lake Skadar to the east, and the Adriatic coastline to the west. The marble tomb lies beneath a ceiling mosaic made from 200,000 gilded tiles. Open daily 9 AM to 5 PM between April and November, entrance €8.

Wolf Trail Hiking Route

The Wolf Trail (#751) begins at Ivanova Korita and creates a 7-kilometer loop through pine and beech forest. This moderate trail climbs 200 meters in elevation, with clear markers throughout the path. A side trail leads to Babina Glava viewpoint, where the Bay of Kotor's blue waters meet grey limestone cliffs. Most hikers complete the loop in 3-4 hours.

Life in Njeguši Village

In Njeguši's stone houses, local families maintain a centuries-old tradition of smoking pork legs in dedicated drying rooms for up to two years. You can visit Petar II Petrović Njegoš's birthplace, now a museum displaying personal items and manuscripts. The village's position in a karst valley creates ideal conditions for meat curing, and small restaurants serve traditional mountain dishes.

Biking and Facilities

The Ivanova Korita visitor center sells detailed trail maps and stocks water and snacks. Mountain bikes are available for rent. You'll find Hotel Monte Rosa and several mountain cottages nearby for overnight stays. The best time to visit is between May and October when trails are dry and temperatures stay between 15-25°C.
