Maafushi, a small island in Kaafu Atoll, stretches just over one kilometer along the Indian Ocean. From swimming with whale sharks at Manta Point to watching fishermen sell their morning catch at the beach market, this accessible Maldivian island lets you experience local life while exploring coral reefs. You'll find more than 50 species of fish in the surrounding waters, including clownfish, parrotfish, and white tip reef sharks.

Getting to Maafushi

Three options connect Male International Airport with Maafushi. The public ferry runs several times per week, taking about 90 minutes and costing MVR31. Speedboats make the journey in 30 minutes for around $25 per person, with departures at 9:15, 13:30, 19:00, and 22:00. Private speedboat transfers cost approximately $170 and run at any time.

Beaches and Swimming Areas

The island has two distinct beach areas. Bikini Beach, on the tourist side, allows Western-style swimwear and includes sunbeds and umbrellas. The public beach requires modest dress and gives you a chance to see daily island life, from children playing soccer to fishermen bringing in their boats.

Marine Life and Diving

Several coral reefs surround Maafushi. At Kadooma Thila, you'll spot white tip sharks, grey tip sharks, and eagle rays swimming among parrotfish and angelfish. Between June and November, manta rays gather at Manta Point. Several diving centers on the island offer PADI certification courses for beginners.

Water Sports and Activities

Water sports centers near Bikini Beach rent equipment for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and jet skiing. Join a night fishing trip to learn line-fishing methods from local fishermen and catch tuna, grouper, or snapper. Many hotels will cook your catch for dinner.

Local Markets and Shopping

Visit the fish market at sunrise to see boats unload fresh tuna and reef fish. Land Pro supermarket stocks imported goods and basic supplies, while shops along Mirihi Magu sell cotton textiles and wooden sculptures. Local craftspeople weave fabrics with geometric patterns using both cotton and synthetic materials.

Weather and Seasonal Considerations

January through April sees daily temperatures between 80°F and 88°F with minimal rain. May through October brings afternoon showers but maintains water visibility of 15-30 meters for diving. April-May and September-October have fewer visitors.

Practical Information

Most hotels and restaurants have WiFi suitable for basic browsing and messaging. ATMs dispense only local currency (MVR). Cover your shoulders and knees when walking around town. While alcohol isn't allowed on the main island, you can find drinks at the Kaani Princess floating bar anchored offshore. A walk across the island takes about 20 minutes.
