Port Moresby

A beautiful place, but stay safe!

The largest city in Papua New Guinea sits on the Gulf of Papua's south coast, serving as the nation's main commercial and governmental hub since colonial times.

Prague invites you to walk across the 14th-century Charles Bridge, explore the astronomical clock in Old Town Square, and tour the expansive Prague Castle complex. The city’s cobblestone streets lead to beer halls serving Pilsner Urquell and roasted pork, as well as modern cafes with espresso and koláče pastries. Public trams run frequently, connecting neighborhoods like Vinohrady with its art nouveau buildings and Holešovice’s industrial galleries. In spring, cherry blossoms line the pathways of Letná Park, and in winter, ice skating rinks pop up near Wenceslas Square. Locals often recommend starting your day early to avoid crowds at popular spots like the John Lennon Wall.

Prague Castle and Surroundings Prague Castle dominates the skyline from its hilltop position above the Vltava River. The complex includes St. Vitus Cathedral, where stained-glass windows depict biblical scenes, and the Old Royal Palace with its vaulted Gothic ceilings. Guards in navy-blue uniforms patrol the gates daily, and a flag ceremony occurs at noon. Tickets for the basic circuit cost 250 CZK, granting access to the cathedral, palace, and Golden Lane—a row of tiny medieval houses once occupied by goldsmiths. Wear sturdy shoes; the castle grounds span 70,000 square meters, with uneven stone paths and steep staircases.

Charles Bridge and Vltava River Thirty baroque statues line Charles Bridge, including the bronze figure of St. John of Nepomuk, polished smooth by centuries of touch. Fishermen cast lines from the riverbanks below, and paddleboats drift past the National Theatre’s golden roof. Early mornings are quieter, ideal for photography without tour groups. For a closer look at the river, rent a rowboat at Slovanský Island or take a 45-minute cruise departing from Čechův Bridge. Avoid midday in summer when the bridge becomes packed; sunset offers cooler temperatures and softer light.

Old Town Square and Historical Center The astronomical clock in Old Town Square draws crowds every hour as mechanical apostles rotate past its golden dials. Nearby, the pink-and-white Church of Our Lady Before Týn towers over cafes selling trdelník pastries rolled in cinnamon sugar. Narrow alleys branch off toward hidden courtyards, such as the one housing the Museum of Alchemy. Street performers—accordion players, living statues—cluster near the Jan Hus monument. The square’s Christmas market, open from late November, fills the air with mulled wine and grilled sausage smells.

Petřín Hill and Parks A funicular railway climbs Petřín Hill, but walking the shaded trails takes about 20 minutes. At the summit, the 63-meter Petřín Tower provides views stretching to the Žižkov Television Tower’s futuristic spikes. Rose gardens bloom between May and October, and the Mirror Maze amuses kids with its warped reflections. Pack a picnic; benches dot the hillside, overlooking red rooftops and church spires. In autumn, the trees turn amber and crimson, creating a quiet contrast to the city’s busier districts.

Local Cuisine and Beer Culture Prague’s pubs serve hearty dishes like svíčková—beef in cream sauce with bread dumplings—and fried cheese with tartar sauce. Many breweries, including U Fleků, have operated since the 15th century and still ferment beer in oak barrels. Try a light pilsner or a dark lager, often cheaper than bottled water. Farmers’ markets, such as the one at Náplavka, sell honey cake, pickled cheese, and fresh berries on weekends. For a sweet finish, stop at a cukrárna for fruit-filled buchty or layered honey cake.
