Fanal Forest in Madeira, Portugal is home to ancient laurel trees, some over 500 years old. This UNESCO World Heritage site preserves one of Europe's last remaining laurel forests. The forest is often enveloped in fog, creating an eerie atmosphere. Visitors can hike through moss-covered landscapes, spot grazing cows, and photograph the gnarled branches of centuries-old trees.

How to get there

The forest entrance is a short walk from the parking area. Since public transportation doesn't serve Fanal, you'll need to rent a car or join a guided tour to visit.

Ancient Trees in the Mist

Fanal Forest is populated by Ocotea foetens trees, some of which are over 500 years old. These laurel trees have twisted branches and moss-covered limbs that create an unusual landscape. The forest is a remnant of the laurel forests that covered much of Southern Europe millions of years ago.

Fanal Witch Tree

Among Fanal's most photographed trees is the distinctive "witch tree" (or "bruxa tree"), an ancient laurel with a dramatically twisted trunk and branches that appear to dance in the mist. Its shape, resembling a figure with outstretched arms, has caught countless photographers' imaginations and become a symbol of the forest. Local folklore suggests the tree got its name because its silhouette in the fog resembles a witch with flowing robes, particularly during dawn when the morning mist creates an ethereal atmosphere around its distinctive form.

Hiking Through the Laurels

You can explore Fanal's misty landscape on several hiking trails. The 11-kilometer Vereda do Fanal (PR13) trail begins at Paul da Serra plateau and passes through the center of the forest. For a shorter hike, take the 7.2-kilometer Levada dos Cedros (PR14) trail, which leads to a waterfall. While hiking, you might see cows grazing among the ancient trees.

The combination of mist, gnarled branches, and filtered sunlight provides many interesting photo opportunities. Be prepared for quick changes in conditions, as the fog can shift rapidly.
