Târgu Mureș is a city in central Romania, in the historical region of Transylvania. It is the seat of Mureș County. The city was once the capital of the Principality of Transylvania.
The city lies on the Mureș River, which crosses Romania from east to west. It is surrounded by the Southern Carpathians.
The city has a population of 215,959, of which 47.5% are ethnic Romanians, 18.5% Hungarians, 8.8% Roma, and 7.6% Germans.
The city is home to the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Târgu Mureș, the Transylvania University of Brasov, the Agricultural University of Transylvania, and the Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca.
