Zrenjanin, Serbia's third-largest city in Vojvodina, stretches along the Begej River. Walk through Freedom Square to see the 1820 neo-baroque City Hall with its summer garden courtyard, or visit the National Museum's collection of 18th-century paintings and prehistoric jewelry. Take a boat ride through the reed-filled waterways of Carska Bara nature reserve, or join thousands of visitors during the August Beer Days festival when local breweries and musicians fill the streets.

Freedom Square

Freedom Square forms the heart of Zrenjanin's city center. The neo-baroque City Hall rises above the pedestrian area, its 19th-century facade leading to a summer garden courtyard. The Cathedral of Saint John of Nepomuk, built in 1868, stands next door with its tall steeple and distinctive red roof. Visit the National Theatre in its 1836 baroque building, or explore the Modern Art Gallery - the first museum dedicated to modern art in Yugoslavia.

Religious Architecture

Several historic churches line Zrenjanin's streets. The Uspenska Serbian Orthodox church dates to 1746 and survived the great fire of 1807, earning status as a Cultural Monument of Great Importance. Walk across the Mali Most steel bridge to reach the neo-Gothic Reformed Church from 1891. The Piarist Church completes the architectural landscape of the city center with its classical design.

Museums and Culture

The National Museum occupies 1,200 square meters across two floors. Browse through 33,000 artifacts including antique firearms, paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries, and prehistoric jewelry. The first floor displays visual and applied arts, while archaeological and ethnological collections fill the second floor.

Natural Areas and Surroundings

Take a boat through Carska Bara nature reserve south of the city, Serbia's largest wetland ecosystem. Watch for native birds among the ponds and marshes, or walk the woodland trails. Drive north to Spa Rusanda, where you can try therapeutic mud treatments from Rusanda Lake at this 150-year-old resort.

Beer Days Festival
