Each winter, artists sculpt 30,000 tons of Torne River ice into rooms with -5°C temperatures, ice furniture, and detailed art. Sleep on reindeer skins or sip drinks from ice glasses.
At the Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, you'll sleep in rooms where ice walls display hand-carved polar bears and northern lights. Sip Arctic cloudberry cocktails from glasses made of crystal-clear Torne River ice, or learn to carve your own ice sculpture under guidance from international artists. The winter hotel transforms completely each December, while ICEHOTEL 365 maintains its frozen chambers year-round through solar power.
Artists transform 30,000 tons of snow and ice into winter sleeping chambers each season. You'll sleep at temperatures between -4 and -9°C, wrapped in expedition-grade thermal sleeping bags on reindeer skins. Standard ice rooms contain ice beds and geometric wall carvings, while art suites showcase detailed sculptures - past designs have included everything from underwater scenes to space exploration themes. In ICEHOTEL 365, solar panels power the cooling system that maintains similar frozen rooms throughout summer.
Ice harvesting begins each March when workers cut 2-ton blocks from the Torne River. After storing these crystal-clear blocks until November, 40 international artists arrive to shape them into walls, furniture, and sculptures. The three-week construction process turns 2,000 square meters of snow and ice into corridors, rooms, and gathering spaces. Each winter brings entirely new designs and layouts.
Step into the Ice Bar to drink cocktails from glasses carved from river ice. The Ice Church welcomes couples for winter weddings with snow-white walls and crystalline altars. Join a 2-hour ice sculpting workshop to learn carving techniques with chisels and ice picks. During winter nights, you can join guided northern lights viewing tours that take you away from artificial light sources for optimal aurora spotting.
Most guests spend one night in an ice room followed by stays in the heated accommodation. The warm rooms and chalets incorporate pine walls and Scandinavian textiles. Visit the seasonal winter hotel from December through April, or experience ICEHOTEL 365's frozen art any time of year. Reach the hotel via Kiruna Airport (10 minutes away) or take the train to Kiruna Station (20 minutes from the hotel). The staff arranges airport and station transfers.
