Ski slopes and thermal spas: Two sides of one mountain

This calm town in northeastern Slovenia is known for its Rogla ski resort, thermal spas, and hiking trails. Local agricultural traditions blend with modern recreational activities.

Zreče, a small town on the slopes of Pohorje in northeastern Slovenia, has become a popular destination throughout the year. You can ski at the Rogla resort, relax in thermal spas, or hike through the Styrian countryside. The town's agricultural traditions are still alive, giving you a chance to experience local rural life alongside modern recreational activities.

Location and Geography of Zreče

Zreče sits in the upper valley of the Dravinja River, on the slopes of the Pohorje mountain range. It's part of the Savinja Statistical Region, located 100 km northeast of Ljubljana, 42 km from Maribor, and 25 km from Celje. Its position in northeastern Slovenia puts it in the country's thermal spa region, while also providing access to alpine environments.

Winter Activities at Rogla Ski Resort

The Rogla ski resort is the center of Zreče's winter tourism. Open from early December through mid-March, Rogla has 13 slopes for skiers of various skill levels. The resort modernized its infrastructure between 2002 and 2004, adding four chairlifts and installing an extensive artificial snow system. These improvements have made Rogla one of Slovenia's most reliable ski centers for snow conditions and season length.

Thermal Spa and Wellness

Zreče's thermal spa facilities complement its winter sports, bringing visitors year-round. The spa resorts use natural thermal waters and provide treatments including energy therapies, Oriental massages, and beauty treatments. You'll find numerous health clinics, saunas, and massage parlors throughout the town, catering to those seeking relaxation and wellness experiences.

Summer Activities in Zreče

In summer, you can explore the Pohorje mountains through hiking and mountain biking. The first observation tower on Rogla, built in 1934, shows that people have been coming here to enjoy the summer landscape for nearly a century. Today, you can follow well-marked trails and see views of the Styrian countryside from various vantage points.

Getting to Zreče

Zreče is well-connected to major Slovenian cities. You can drive there in about an hour from Ljubljana, the capital city. If you're flying into Slovenia, the nearest major airport is in Ljubljana, about 100 km away. You can also take buses from nearby cities like Celje and Maribor.

Accommodation in Zreče

The town and its surroundings have various places to stay. You can choose from hotels, self-catering units, holiday houses, and villas. In the Rogla resort area alone, there are over 1,200 beds available. Two significant options are the Hotel Dobrava in Zreče and Hotel Planja on Rogla, both built as part of the area's tourism development since the late 1970s.

Development of Tourism in Zreče

Tourism in Zreče began before World War II, but many facilities were destroyed during the conflict. The post-war period saw gradual rebuilding, with the Koča Lodge on Rogla reconstructed in 1956. A significant change came in the late 1970s when Unior, a local hand tool company, took over the management of tourism facilities. This led to the construction of new hotels and the expansion of ski infrastructure. The plan was to develop Rogla alongside other tourist centers on Pohorje, combining skiing, spa resorts, and agrotourism. This strategy has shaped Zreče into the diverse destination it is today.
