Khujand is a city of contradictions. A crossroads of cultures and religions, it’s home to a melting pot of people from across the region. At the same time, it retains a distinctly Tajik feel, with its narrow streets and bazaars selling traditional wares. The city is also surprisingly green, with parks and gardens dotting the centre. It’s a great place to people-watch, with locals and traders streaming through the markets, and students filling the leafy boulevards. Khujand is also a great base for exploring the rest of Tajikistan. The nearby Pamir Mountains are a stunning backdrop to the city, and make for great hiking and camping.
