Lutsk (population 220,000) sits in northwestern Ukraine, where you can climb the towers of a 14th-century castle, examine 16th-century religious paintings, and watch puppet shows in a medieval fortress. Walk through the old town to see the copper-domed Holy Trinity Cathedral, the three-story Great Synagogue from 1629, and street performers in the market square. The city hosts medieval reenactment festivals in summer, while its modern creative spaces showcase experimental theater and contemporary art.

Exploring the Old Town

Lubart's Castle anchors the medieval center of Lutsk. You can explore both the 13th-century Upper Castle and 14th-century Lower Castle, with their stone towers overlooking the Styr River. The Museum of Bells within the castle walls displays Ukraine's oldest bell collection, including 16th-century examples that still ring clearly. The castle grounds host medieval festivals in July and August, with sword fighting demonstrations and traditional craft workshops.

Churches and Synagogues

The Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral (1610) contains intricate sculptures and frescoes covering its interior walls, depicting scenes from both Old and New Testaments. The Great Synagogue (1626-1629) rises three stories high with defensive stone walls that are 2 meters thick. Inside the Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral (1755), look up to see detailed Rococo carvings and a green copper dome that's visible across the city.

Museums and Culture

The Museum of Volyn Icons displays over 100 religious paintings from the 16th to 19th centuries, with detailed explanations in Ukrainian and English. In the Museum of Regional Studies on Shopena Street, you'll find archaeological artifacts from local excavations and medieval weapons. The Korsaks' Museum on Karbysheva Street rotates exhibitions of Ukrainian contemporary art every three months.

Food and Markets

Start your morning at the old town's market square, where local vendors set up from 7 AM. You can taste gryczanki - crispy buckwheat cakes made with grain from nearby farms - or try handmade dumplings with various fillings. Each region of Ukraine has its own borscht recipe, and restaurants around the square prepare the Volyn version with local mushrooms and beans.

Current City Life

Since 2022, Lutsk's population has grown by 70,000 people, many bringing tech industry experience. The "Abo Abo" creative center occupies a renovated warehouse, combining startup offices with art exhibitions and concert spaces. In another converted industrial building, the Garmyder theatre group performs contemporary plays every weekend and runs acting workshops for residents.
