Mariupol

Mariupol is a port city in southeastern Ukraine on the Sea of Azov. It is the administrative center of the Mariupol Raion (district), and is located in the Donetsk Oblast (province). Mariupol lies on the western shore of the Sea of Azov, in the heart of the Donbas region. The city is mainly known for its steel production and shipbuilding. Mariupol was founded on the orders of Catherine the Great in 1778 as the Russian naval outpost of Yuzovka. The city was named after the Russian Empress Maria Alexandrovna. In 1779, Yuzovka was renamed Mariupol after the Empress Maria Alexandrovna.
