Located 130 miles from Los Angeles and 150 miles from Las Vegas in California's Mojave Desert, Barstow sits at the junction of three major highways. You'll find vintage locomotives at the Western America Rail Museum, walk through colorful canyons at Rainbow Basin, and shop at more than 100 stores in the Tanger Outlet Center. The Route 66 Mother Road Museum preserves artifacts from America's most famous highway, while the 1911 Casa del Desierto railway station stands as a reminder of the region's railroad era.

Highway Connections

Interstate 15, Interstate 40, and State Highway 58 converge in Barstow. You can fly into Barstow-Daggett Airport on private aircraft, or take Amtrak trains to Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and other regional cities. The location makes Barstow a natural rest point for travelers crossing the Mojave Desert.

Museums and Cultural Sites

At the Route 66 Mother Road Museum, you'll see photographs and artifacts from the golden age of America's most famous highway. The Western America Rail Museum lets you walk among historic train cars and engines while learning about railroad history. Inside the Mojave River Valley Museum, you'll find local archaeological discoveries, mineral collections, and exhibits detailing Native American life and early settlement patterns.

Rainbow Basin and Desert Areas

Drive 8 miles north of downtown to reach Rainbow Basin's twisted rock formations in red, brown, and white. Follow marked trails through canyons and past geological formations shaped by ancient forces. Watch for desert wildlife like roadrunners, lizards, and jackrabbits. Set up camp at designated sites to experience the desert landscape overnight.

Shopping and Rest Stops

The train depot-style Barstow Station receives more than 20,000 tour buses each year, with food courts and gift shops inside. At Tanger Outlet Center, walk between multiple buildings housing over 100 brand-name stores.
