Cape Canaveral, located on Florida's east coast, is synonymous with space exploration and rocket launches. In this coastal city, you can watch spacecraft lift off from nearby viewing areas, tour the Kennedy Space Center, and relax on Atlantic beaches. Cape Canaveral is also home to the historic Cape Canaveral Lighthouse, expansive wildlife refuges, and a busy cruise port.

Kennedy Space Center and Rocket Launches

At the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, you can examine large rockets from NASA's past missions, experience a simulated shuttle launch, and possibly meet an astronaut. While the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station is closed to the public, you can observe rocket launches from designated viewing spots around the cape.

Canaveral National Seashore and Wildlife Refuge

Cape Canaveral has extensive natural areas. The Canaveral National Seashore stretches for 24 miles along the Atlantic coast, providing a nesting ground for sea turtles and habitat for over 300 bird species. You can hike, fish, or unwind on the undeveloped beaches. Adjacent to the seashore, the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge covers 140,000 acres, including coastal dunes, saltwater estuaries, and hardwood hammocks.

Cape Canaveral Lighthouse

Built in 1848, the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse has long guided ships away from offshore hazards. While general access is restricted, you can join guided tours to learn about its history and function.

Port Canaveral

Port Canaveral has developed into a busy cruise port. Even if you're not embarking on a cruise, visit the Exploration Tower for views of the port and to learn about local history and ecology through interactive exhibits.

Transportation to Cape Canaveral

Orlando International Airport, about an hour's drive west, is the nearest large airport. You can rent a car or use a shuttle service to reach Cape Canaveral. Within the area, Space Coast Area Transit buses connect key sites and nearby towns.

Accommodation and Dining

You'll find a range of places to stay in Cape Canaveral, from beachfront resorts to budget-friendly hotels. For a different experience, consider camping in Canaveral National Seashore.
