Charlotte, North Carolina's largest city, is a major financial hub and cultural center. Known as the "Queen City," it's home to Bank of America's headquarters and features a striking Uptown skyline. You'll find acclaimed restaurants, the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and the U.S. National Whitewater Center in this vibrant Southern metropolis.

Exploring Uptown Charlotte

Uptown, Charlotte's central business district, has a modern skyline with the 871-foot Bank of America Corporate Center as its focal point. This area drives the city's economy and houses many cultural institutions. You can visit the Levine Museum of the New South here, which chronicles the post-Civil War history of the Southern United States through interactive exhibits. The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, in a striking terra cotta building, displays mid-20th-century art from acclaimed European and American artists.

Charlotte's Sports Scene

Charlotte has several professional sports teams. You can watch the NFL's Carolina Panthers play at Bank of America Stadium in Uptown, or catch an NBA game with the Charlotte Hornets at the Spectrum Center. Soccer fans can attend Charlotte FC matches, the city's Major League Soccer team that began play in 2022. The NASCAR Hall of Fame provides an immersive experience into the history and excitement of stock car racing, reflecting the city's deep ties to the sport.

Distinctive Neighborhoods

Beyond Uptown, Charlotte's neighborhoods each have their own character. NoDa (North Davidson) has transformed from a textile mill village into an arts district filled with galleries, live music venues, and colorful murals. You can enjoy a craft beer at one of the many breweries or catch a show at the Neighborhood Theatre. Plaza Midwood is known for its eclectic mix of vintage shops, international restaurants, and casual bars. These areas showcase Charlotte's creative side and offer a different atmosphere from the corporate feel of Uptown.

Outdoor Experiences

Charlotte's climate allows for year-round outdoor pursuits. At the U.S. National Whitewater Center, located just outside the city, you can go whitewater rafting, kayaking, rock climbing, and zip lining across its 1,300 acres. For a more relaxed experience, visit Freedom Park, a 98-acre green space with a lake, walking trails, and sports facilities. The Little Sugar Creek Greenway provides a scenic path for walking, jogging, or cycling through the heart of the city.

Food and Drink

Charlotte's restaurants range from Southern staples to innovative new concepts. You can try classic Carolina barbecue at places like Midwood Smokehouse or explore farm-to-table dishes at Kindred in nearby Davidson. The city's craft beer scene has grown rapidly, with dozens of breweries like NoDa Brewing Company and Olde Mecklenburg Brewery offering tours and taprooms. For a variety of local flavors, head to 7th Street Public Market, where you can sample local produce, artisanal cheeses, and freshly baked goods.

Getting Around

While driving is the most convenient way to explore Charlotte, the city has been expanding its public transportation network. The LYNX Blue Line light rail connects Uptown with south Charlotte and the University area. The Gold Line streetcar serves parts of Uptown and surrounding neighborhoods. For visitors, the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) operates buses and a free Gold Rush shuttle service within Uptown. You can also use Charlotte B-cycle, a bike-sharing service with stations throughout the city center and popular neighborhoods.
