You can hike among towering red rock spires at Colorado National Monument, fish in any of Grand Mesa's 300 alpine lakes, or bike the Kokopelli Trail system through desert canyons. The surrounding valley has become a wine-growing region, with vineyards scattered across the landscape beneath the world's largest flat-top mountain.

Getting Around Grand Junction

You can fly into Grand Junction Regional Airport, which connects with Denver and Salt Lake City, with new routes to Las Vegas starting in 2025. The California Zephyr train stops daily at Grand Junction Station on its Chicago to San Francisco route. Within the city, Grand Valley Transit runs 11 bus routes to key locations. Downtown areas have wide sidewalks with local art installations, making walking a practical option.

Natural Landmarks Near Grand Junction

Colorado National Monument's canyon walls and rock formations rise above the city. Drive the 23-mile Rim Rock Road to see monoliths and canyons, or explore 40 miles of maintained trails. Grand Mesa reaches heights over 10,000 feet and contains more than 300 alpine lakes where you can fish, boat, or hike in all seasons. In the Rattlesnake Arches area, you'll find 35 natural stone arches within a one-mile radius, accessible by 4x4 vehicles or on foot.

Biking and River Activities

You can explore over 150 miles of desert and mountain trails ranging from beginner paths to technical routes. The Kokopelli Trail system runs from Grand Junction to Moab, Utah, stretching 142 miles through canyons and mesas. Multiple access points along the Colorado River allow for rafting and fishing. Local bike shops rent equipment and provide trail maps for self-guided rides.

Downtown and Cultural Scene

Art installations and sculptures line Main Street's sidewalks, placed among local shops in restored 19th-century buildings. From June through September, vendors sell local produce and crafts at the weekly farmers' market. Colorado Mesa University's 11,000 students add to the city's cultural life with theater productions, concerts, and art exhibitions throughout the academic year.

Grand Junction sees sun 230 days per year, with summer temperatures rising above 90°F (32°C) and winter lows dropping to around 27°F (-2.6°C). During summer months, start your outdoor activities early to avoid midday heat. Spring and fall bring mild temperatures ideal for hiking and biking. With minimal snowfall, you can access lower elevation trails throughout the year.
