Lincoln is a city in the U.S. state of Nebraska. It is the county seat of Lancaster County and the home of the University of Nebraska. The population was 258,379 at the 2010 census. Lincoln is the second most populous city in Nebraska and the 113th most populous city in the United States.
The city was founded in 1856 as the village of Lancaster on the wild prairie. The village was renamed Lincoln in 1859, after the newly elected U.S. president, Abraham Lincoln. The city became the county seat of Lancaster County in 1859. The University of Nebraska was founded in Lincoln in 1867.
The city of Lincoln has a mayor-council form of government. The mayor is the chief executive officer of the city, and the council is the legislative body. The mayor and eight council members are elected at large. The mayor and council members serve four-year terms. The city council meets every other Monday evening.
