I lived in nearby San Marcos for 6 months and visited Oceanside on several occasions as it was the nearest beach town.
Oceanside has a really nice beach with a beautiful wooden pier. At the very end of the pier, there was a Ruby's Diner with terrific oreo shakes, burgers, and wonderful views of the ocean. Sadly, it seems to have closed down permanently. I would still recommend the pier itself.
Other than that I often felt a little unsafe in Oceanside, with strange people moving around in town. And apart from the beach, I did not find anything enjoyable to do there.
Stop by the beach and pier if you are driving past, but for a proper visit, I would recommend La Jolla or San Diego instead.
